Endoscopy

High-resolution micro-optics for medicine and technology

An endoscope is an optical instrument that is used in the medical field through visual inspection and reflection of hidden body cavities. Medically necessary visualizations of the interior of the body can be made possible by introducing the endoscope through natural or artificial body openings during preventative care examinations or surgical interventions. A further field of application is plant construction and mechanical engineering, in which an endoscope can be used to observe cavities, e.g. in the maintenance of machinery.

Requirements for endoscopes

The primary requirement for a modern endoscope is the best possible image reproduction, which can be influenced by factors such as magnification, depth of field or resolution. Depending on its location, the endoscope has a rigid or flexible tubular shape and is equipped with optics at the tip. The influencing factors for optimal image reproduction are dependent on the apical optics, which in the simplest case represents a mirror or assumes a more complex form in the form of a video system.

Optical components of an endoscope

Nowadays, modern endoscopes are often equipped with high-quality miniature cameras that have a built-in micro lens for imaging purposes. A micro lens of spherical or aspheric shape, as part of the optical system, allows the visual representation of the tissue structure to be examined in real time. As precision optics, the micro lens meets the highest requirements for the best possible imaging quality and the lowest possible roughness.

In addition to a high-resolution micro lens and various miniature devices for surgical procedures, an endoscope consists of an integrated illumination system. Prisms with special coatings are required to ensure loss-free transmission of the incoming light from the lighting system. Machine inspections or surgical procedures can thus be optimally illuminated and displayed on the examiner’s monitor. The following graphic shows the general structure of an endoscope.
