Jena sets a new record

Over 720,000 kilometers cycled during CITY CYCLING 2025

Jena, October 2025: Jena remains on course for success: this year’s CITY CYCLING event set a new record with over 720,000 kilometers cycled and 118 tons of CO₂ saved. A total of 3,683 active cyclists in 163 teams took part in the nationwide climate protection campaign, once again making Jena one of the most cycling-friendly cities in Thuringia.

Schools drive the success

Once again, Jena’s schools formed the backbone of the impressive overall result: almost 40 percent of all kilometers contributed by school teams. The Otto Schott Gymnasium secured the top spot for the first time, with its 371 participants cycling over 74,000 kilometers. Close behind was last year’s overall winner, the Angergymnasium, with 72,566 kilometers and 471 active cyclists.

Several other schools also ranked among the city’s top 20 teams, including Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium, Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium, Christliche Gymnasium, Montessorischule, and Kaleidoskop-Schule. This strong presence illustrates how natural cycling has become part of everyday life for many young people.

Strong performances from business and science

In addition to schools, companies and research institutions also delivered outstanding results. Particularly noteworthy are the University Hospital Jena (40,000 km), Friedrich Schiller University Jena (27,000 km), Carl Zeiss Jena (20,000 km), Stadtwerke Jena (18,000 km), Schott Jena (16,000 km), and Enke Steuerberatung (14,000 km).

The team from asphericon GmbH, long-time supporter and main sponsor of CITY CYCLING in Jena, also contributed to the overall result with 5,000 kilometers cycled and an average of 333 kilometers per person.

“Every year, CITY CYCLING shows what is possible when an entire city gets on their bikes,” says Managing Director Alexander W. Zschäbitz, summarizing the results. “It is particularly impressive that all areas of city life are represented: from schools and universities, research institutions, and companies to families, clubs, government agencies, and many more. We can be truly proud of this collective achievement. The new kilometer record for Jena is an expression of commitment, team spirit and an increasing awareness of sustainable mobility.”

STADTRADELN is a nationwide initiative organized by the Klima-Bündnis e.V. encouraging people to use bicycles for as many everyday trips as possible. In Jena, the campaign is organized by the city of Jena with the support of the Free State of Thuringia, the Working Group for Bicycle-Friendly Communities in Thuringia (AGFK), ADFC Thuringia, and asphericon GmbH.
