Successful City Cycling in Jena

A Sign for Sustainable Mobility

Jena, October 2023: Stadtradeln in Jena, a Germany-wide community initiative to promote sustainable mobility and reduce CO2 emissions, is coming to an end with impressive results. A total of 2,900 enthusiastic cyclists took part in the seventh edition of the event, covering an impressive 550,000 kilometers on their bikes between September 2 and 22, 2023. This not only significantly exceeded the results of previous years, but also set a new record in the history of the event.

The fact that the average age of all participants was 25 years, the lowest since the start of Stadtradeln Jena, also shows the great interest of young people in cycling. Accordingly, the school teams of Angergymnasium (50,000 km) and Otto-Schott-Gymnasium (37,000 km) lead the ranking of total kilometers cycled. Angergymnasium also scored with the largest active team. A new record was set with a total of 292 participants. Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium (20,000 km) rounded off the podium in the school category.

The remaining non-school teams are led in the category of total kilometers cycled by Jena University Hospital with 36,000 kilometers, followed by the Stadtwerke Group (17,500 km) and Ronald Enke Steuerberatung (16,500 km). In total, an impressive 90 tons of CO2 were saved during the city cycling event.

“I am very pleased with the high level of participation in the City Cycling Event. Cycling is not only an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way of getting around, it also has many positive effects on body and mind. Everyone benefits from daily cycling - the environment, the climate and ourselves,” said Mayor and Head of the Department for Urban Development and Environment Christian Gerlitz.

Alexander W. Zschäbitz, Managing Director of asphericon GmbH, participant and sponsor of the event, added: “We are grateful to be able to host this very special event together with the city of Jena. In addition to the active participation of our own team, we are especially pleased with the enthusiasm of people of all ages for cycling. The new record numbers of participants and kilometers covered underline the importance of cycling for our city. We hope that this trend will continue next year so that we can be the strongest Stadtradeln community in Thuringia. This year, the city of Jena is in second place in the Thuringia ranking, only 30,000 kilometers behind the winner, the state capital of Erfurt.
