Topping-Out Ceremony for Sustainable new Building

Following a six-month construction period

Topping-Out Ceremony for Sustainable new Building for the first wood-hybrid construction in the photonics industry

Jena, October 2022: On October 7, the leader in the field of aspherical optical systems celebrated the topping-out ceremony for its sustainable wood-hybrid construction at the Jena location. After less than six months of construction, it was possible to hold a topping-out ceremony and erect the topping-out tree in a celebratory atmosphere. Guests included employees of asphericon GmbH, the Züblin construction team, the architects from Schüler & Reddersen GmbH, and other external planning teams, along with guests.

Sven R. Kiontke, Managing Director of asphericon GmbH, expressed thanks to all those involved in construction for the diligence and quality. He placed particular emphasis on the scope of the project. “This construction not only marks the first wooden construction in the photonics industry, but also one of the first in the region. By taking this step, asphericon proves once again that sustainable business can be more than just lip service. Like the rest of the Jena location, the building will be powered with 100% renewable energy. This means that asphericon’s carbon footprint is better than 80% of similar-sized companies,” says Kiontke.

As part of this thank-you speech, Michael Stange, Technical Manager of the Züblin Jena branch, also underlined the ability to supply all of the construction elements despite the currently challenging overall economic situation. This means that the construction project is completely on schedule and all subsequent work can go ahead according to plan.

In March 2022, construction of a four-story administrative and development building with a usable area of almost 1,200 m² got underway at the asphericon headquarters. The new-build, implemented as a wood-hybrid system, has a carbon footprint that is significantly lower than a conventional concrete building, and also makes for a pleasant indoor climate. asphericon is investing a total of €15 million, which alongside investment in the building also includes additions to the plant and machinery.
